write on!
A Creative Writing e-mail Correspondence Course for Home Schools
While this is a complete writing course, it is not a complete grammar course. So do not be surprised or disappointed if I do not correct every grammar or spelling mistake. It depends a lot on the individual's age and skill. My purpose in WRITE ON! is to help students enjoy writing as they develop their skills, and to discover that writing is simply "talking on paper". If they can talk, they can write! Often students will pour themselves into a piece of writing only to find that they must correct a long list of spelling and grammar mistakes. By the time they re-vise, re-spell, and re-write, they are ready to re-bel! And many times, they do. More important, they no longer recognize the piece of writing as the expression of their own minds, but rather the reflection of a textbook or instructor. They logically interpret these "mistakes" as poor writing when their writing (expression of thought) may actually be very good. What a shame! I will not totally ignore grammar and spelling mistakes, especially if the same mistakes are repeated, but I won't pick at every mistake either. If children tell us a story in person, we don't stop them and correct every error in their speech. If we did, they would soon stop telling us things. That's precisely what happens in writing. I will look for expression, clarity, structure, good sentence and paragraph formation, and other components of good writing.
Poetry is not included in this course.
